How to Stay Healthy in Old Age

Staying healthy at an old age becomes more challenging when the eyes start to get weaker and so does our bones. Our declining health in old age says a lot about our lifestyle in the preceding years. However, it is not impossible to keep yourself healthy and fit at an older age.

You must have seen elderly people at an age of 70 to 80, walking their dog in the park more actively than the youngsters around. It is because of the few healthy habits that they incorporate in their lives and then live by them. Want to know what those habits are and how you can benefit from them? Regular Checkup

Once you are 70, I would suggest you to go for regular check-ups to reduce any risks of heart diseases, diabetes and the other chronic diseases. It will help regulate your health issues and you will be able to address them within proper time. This way your doctor will be able to give you proper medication in time, advise you on how you can improve your overall health by altering your diet and incorporating other healthy habits.

Regular Visit to the Dentist

Our teeth start to deteriorate very fast at an old age. If you want to prevent some severe toothache and painful root canal, give your dentist regular visits within every 3 to 6 months. This way, the dentist will address the issues within time and advise you properly on how to keep your teeth strong and prevent them from decaying quickly.

Cut Down on Smoking

The entire internal system of the elderly gets weaker with time and therefore, you need to be extra careful about your health. Smoking weed and cigarettes like the old times may affect your lungs more badly at such an age. Moreover, a study also proves that smoking leads to memory loss as well. Therefore, it is necessary that you cut down on all such habits that can affect your health in any way.

Stay Physically and Mentally Active

As soon as you get retired, you prepare your mind to live your remaining years by staying in bed and watching television or reading newspaper. However, doing so will only decline your health much quickly. If you want to stay healthy and live a happier old age, keep your body and mind both active. Engage in healthy activities like yoga, meditation, swimming and the like. Doing so will prevent the rigidity and pain in the body and keep your muscles strong.

Stay Socially Active

Staying socially active is necessary for keeping your mind at peace and being emotionally strong. As soon as you grow old and get retirement, you begin to feel lonely and it affects the brain negatively. Therefore, make sure you head out and catch up with your old friends and family. Join a yoga center or get a membership at a club where you can find the people of your age to connect with.

Increase Your Protein Intake

Protein is a nutrient that instantly boosts the energy and curbs your unnecessary cravings. Increasing your intake of protein can help you feel less tired and weak throughout the day. Add fish and eggs to your protein and make sure you cut down on sugar as it gives you artificial energy that goes down the drains soon and leaves you feel weaker than before.

Also, cut down on anything that can increase your risk of greater cholesterol level. Consult your doctor or your nutritionist if you have any disease that may require you to alter your diet.

Try to Fall Asleep Naturally

Most of the seniors who experience insomnia or restlessness resort to heavy sedatives without a second thought. These sedatives may be able to put them to sleep but their harsh side-effects worsen your health only. Therefore, rather than going for that option, try out natural ways to fall asleep.

For instance, take chamomile tea for better sleep and improve the atmosphere of your room by getting a humidifier or keeping it pitch dark. As per a study, chamomile tea does not only help in improving sleep but also reduces the impact of osteoporosis and promotes overall health.

Travel for Mental Relief and Relaxation

You spend your whole life dealing with the extreme pressure at work of meeting deadlines and pleasing the boss. You do not even get time to head out for a trip or relax on a beach too often. Therefore, just when you get retired, instead of sitting at home and watching the same old news, plan a much-needed trip for your ultimate relaxation.

Go on a long vacation and enjoy yourself by visiting new spas and salons and beaches. Travelling put a great positive impact on your health without you knowing it. As per a study from the Global Commission on Aging for Retirement Studies, traveling can actually keep you healthier.

Plus, the conscious breathing which is a part of meditation leads to better blood circulation and improved health of digestive system. It leaves you feeling happier and more positive at an older age. Make it a part of your daily routine and you will feel a clear improvement in your physical and mental health.
